Liposuction

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes localised fat deposits and reshapes body contours. It is most commonly performed on the abdomen, flanks, thighs or buttocks, where fat may persist despite regular exercise and a balanced diet. During the procedure, the surgeon inserts a thin cannula beneath the skin through small incisions to loosen and suction out fat. A solution is usually injected into the treatment area to help reduce bleeding and ease pain. The type of anaesthesia and the specific technique depend on the extent of the procedure and the doctor’s assessment.

Liposuction is particularly suitable for people who are close to their ideal weight, have firm, elastic skin and are concerned about fat deposits in specific areas. Realistic expectations and a medical condition that allows surgery are important. A plastic surgeon assesses suitability during an in-person consultation. Liposuction does not remove stretch marks or cellulite and is neither a treatment for obesity nor a substitute for weight loss.

Liposuction areas

  • Abdomen and lower abdomen: removal of localised subcutaneous fat and reshaping of the abdominal contour. Liposuction does not correct diastasis recti or significant overhanging skin.
  • Flanks and waist: contouring the sides of the torso and creating a smoother transition between the waist and hips.
  • Back: reduction of fat folds in the upper or lower back, including the bra area. A lift may be appropriate if excess skin is present.
  • Upper arms: reduction of the fat layer between the shoulder and elbow. Significantly loose skin may require brachioplasty.
  • Thighs: treatment of the inner, outer, front or back surfaces; circumferential thigh contouring may also be suitable for selected patients.
  • Knees and calves: targeted treatment of selected areas of excess fat in the lower limbs following an individual assessment.
  • Under the chin and underarms: smaller areas requiring a precisely defined treatment extent.
  • 360° torso: combined treatment of the abdomen, flanks and back to contour the entire circumference of the torso.
