In young women, the surgeon chooses a procedure that does not damage the milk ducts and therefore does not prevent future breastfeeding. The substance of the procedure is loosening the connective tissue along the milk ducts. In patients who are unlikely to breastfeed in the future, the milk ducts can be interrupted during the procedure. The method with the interruption of the milk ducts is more effective. The nipples are then sutured in a new position. The procedure lasts up to 1 hour.

Since it is a simple procedure, it is usually performed under local anaesthesia, but some patients require general anaesthesia.
