Banana roll refers to an arched bulge at the top of the back of the thigh, just below the buttock. It may consist of a localised fat pad, loose skin or a combination of both. The term Banana Roll Lift encompasses reshaping this area, but does not specify a single standardised surgical technique.
The procedure may be considered for a persistent roll beneath the buttocks or limited excess skin in someone with stable weight. It is essential during consultation to distinguish fat deposits from sagging of the buttock itself. More extensive laxity may be better addressed with a buttock lift or another approach. The natural crease beneath the buttock is not a defect in itself.
If excess skin remains after liposuction in this area, subsequent skin correction may be needed. Particularly after extensive fat removal, skin elasticity and preservation of buttock support must be assessed. The surgeon determines whether gentle liposuction should be combined with skin removal or staged; further fat removal may not be the appropriate solution.
We postpone surgery in cases of infection, acute illness or inadequately controlled health conditions. Clotting disorders, smoking and impaired healing can significantly increase risk. Already weakened buttock support or deformity after previous liposuction requires especially careful assessment. Simply removing more fat may be unsuitable in such cases.
Preparation includes examination while standing, assessment of skin elasticity and previous procedures. Tell the doctor about all medicines and supplements; do not stop them without agreement. Preoperative examinations and anaesthetic preparation depend on the planned method. The consultation includes an explanation of realistic benefits, possible scars and restrictions on sitting and movement after surgery.
With suitable anatomy, isolated excess fat can be corrected through very gentle, limited liposuction. In selected patients with excess skin, targeted skin removal or adjustment of tissue support may be considered. The surgeon individually plans the extent and incision placement. Excessive fat removal here can impair buttock support, deepen the crease and worsen sagging.
After the procedure, follow instructions on wound care, any compression and follow-ups. Sitting, resting and movement depend on the technique used, especially when the wound is beneath the buttock. Avoid friction and tension at the sutures. The operating surgeon determines the duration of restrictions and appropriate return to normal activities.
Swelling, bruising, tenderness and tightness may temporarily change the area’s appearance. Healing after liposuction alone differs from healing after skin removal. Return to work is individual and also takes sitting time into account. Resume sport and significant lower-limb loading only according to follow-up assessment.
The result may be a smoother transition between the buttock and thigh; perfect symmetry cannot be guaranteed. Incisions leave permanent scars. Risks include irregularities, asymmetry, changes in the infragluteal crease, worsening sagging, bleeding, infection, fluid accumulation and impaired healing. Unsuitable or excessive fat removal can cause a deformity that is difficult to correct, making careful method selection essential.
