It targets skin folds around the bra line that may persist after weight loss or develop as the skin loses elasticity. The goal is a smoother back contour and greater comfort in clothing. The operation leaves a permanent scar.
The procedure is primarily suitable for women with loose skin and more pronounced back folds at a stable weight; a similar correction may be considered for men according to findings. If the problem is only local fat and the skin is elastic, liposuction may suffice. However, fat removal alone cannot reliably eliminate a skin overhang.
A lift often complements liposuction if the skin cannot contract sufficiently after fat removal and remains loose or overhanging. This is particularly important after more extensive liposuction and when skin elasticity is reduced. Depending on the findings, both procedures can be planned together or the lift performed later; the surgeon determines the extent and timing with safe healing in mind.
Surgery cannot be planned during acute infection or unstable serious disease. Clotting disorders, poorly controlled diabetes and healing problems require individual assessment. Smoking increases the risk of impaired circulation and wound healing. If further major weight loss is planned, the procedure should be postponed until weight is stable.
During consultation, we assess the extent of skin folds, tissue quality and any previous scars. We plan the future scar so that, if possible, it is covered by the band of a normally worn bra or swimsuit. Preoperative examinations are supplemented by instructions on medicines, nicotine and anaesthesia. Do not change treatment yourself, and arrange help for the first few days.
The surgeon removes a previously marked strip of excess skin and subcutaneous tissue and closes the wound in layers. Contouring of surrounding fat may be added if needed. Incision length depends on the extent of the folds and sometimes extends onto the sides of the torso. Placement along the bra line does not mean the scar will be hidden by every garment. The surgeon determines procedure extent and anaesthesia.
After surgery, dressings, follow-ups and, if recommended, supportive or compression garments are important. Drains are sometimes used temporarily. Protect the wound from pressure, friction and tension. Raising the arms overhead, deep forward bends and carrying heavy objects can strain sutures, so these movements are initially adjusted according to surgeon instructions.
Swelling, bruising, tightness and temporarily reduced sensation are common. Gentle walking is usually introduced early, but return to work depends on its nature and healing. Resume sport and movements that significantly stretch the upper back gradually after a check-up. The scar continues to develop and soften long after the wound closes.
The procedure can reduce skin rolls and smooth the upper-back outline. Subsequent weight changes and ageing affect the result. Risks include widened or conspicuous scars, asymmetry, bleeding, infection, fluid accumulation, wound separation and altered sensation. As with other operations, anaesthetic and thrombosis risks also exist. Subsequent correction is needed in some cases.
