The procedure is intended for women and men with stable weight who are troubled by local fat deposits or skin overhangs on the back. During the consultation, we assess skin quality, the extent of changes and their relationship to surrounding areas. Fat removal alone may be insufficient when there is significant excess skin.

A lift often complements liposuction if the skin cannot contract sufficiently after fat removal and remains loose or overhanging. This is particularly important after more extensive liposuction and when skin elasticity is reduced. Depending on the findings, both procedures can be planned together or the lift performed later; the surgeon determines the extent and timing with safe healing in mind.

We postpone surgery in cases of acute illness, infection in the treatment area or unstable health. Clotting disorders, poorly controlled diabetes and impaired healing require particular attention. Smoking increases complication risk. Planned substantial weight loss is a reason to adjust weight first and reconsider the surgery date.

A personal consultation and preoperative examinations take place according to the procedure’s extent and your health. Inform the doctor of all medicines, dietary supplements and previous operations. Do not stop medication yourself. You will receive instructions on limiting nicotine, preparing for anaesthesia and arranging help after returning home. Planning also includes an explanation of the position and length of any scars.

When fat predominates and skin is sufficiently elastic, liposuction through small access points can improve the contour. Overhanging skin requires surgical removal and suturing tissues in a new position. Incision placement depends on the extent of excess skin; in the upper back, a scar can sometimes be planned along the bra line. The surgeon individually determines anaesthesia and any combination of methods.

After the procedure, wound care, regular follow-ups and, if recommended, compression garments are required. Drains are sometimes temporarily inserted to remove fluid. Follow the recommended resting position and avoid pulling at the sutures. Moderate walking is usually part of the routine, but intensive movement must wait.

Swelling, bruising, tightness and temporary changes in sensation are part of normal healing. Return to work depends on the surgery’s extent and the physical demands of the job. Resume sport, lifting and movements that significantly stretch the back gradually after a check-up. The final shape is assessed only once swelling has subsided.

Contouring can soften transitions between the back and flanks and reduce skin folds. Stable weight helps maintain results, though natural ageing continues. Scars after skin removal are permanent. Risks include bleeding, infection, fluid accumulation, impaired healing, asymmetry and contour irregularities; more extensive surgery also carries thrombosis and anaesthetic risks. Correction is sometimes needed.
